1) The first task is for library searches: search the library catalogue and check out the full-text database search via the library website and find three academic articles that relate to the topic of your first essay. Write a report to post in your blog that summarises the key points in the articles, and comment on how this task has helped you formulate your topic.
I am choosing to to do my essay on 'Moral Panics'. I will firstly outline the meaning and interpretaions of what a moral panic is, and I will be doing this by using past and present examples of moral Panics. I am going to also include the characteristics in regards to a moral panic so that society knows how to identify with one. But of course I am also going to include moral panics in regards to Communications and technologies and use exmaples of such panics.
I have come across thus far a couple of Academic referernces, those being:
‘Deviancy amplification and moral panic’, in Jones, M. & Jones, E., Mass Media, 1999
which is a course reader, and also a Journal that has an example of a modern moral panic
Wright, R (2000) ‘I’d sell you suicide': Pop music and moral panic in the age of Marilyn Manson’ Vol 19 pg.365

7. Why do all phone numbers in Hollywood films start with '555'?
30 years ago, when the use of exchange names as part of the telephone number was still popular in the USA, dials had letters as well as numbers and the first 3 letters of the exchange name were dialled followed by numbers. An example might be CENtral 78978. You dialled CEN 78978 or, using all numbers, 236 78978. It so happened that 5 on the dial corresponded with J K and L and you can’t make any English place names using any combination of J, K and L as the first 3 letters. So the 555 code was allocated to service levels such as Directory Assistance, Operator, Repair Service, etc. Due to the "low fill" of the 555 code, Hollywood was encouraged to quote 555 numbers in their productions to prevent real subscribers being harassed by members of the public trying out the numbers quoted on the screen.

Media Theory Lecture 2
Last weeks lecture summarised "Media Theory".
Stephen covered Communication Studies (USA), Media Studies (UK) and also the cultural studies in Europe. Due to the advance in technological communications, theorists struggle to keep up. Cinema, television, newspapers and radio have had a huge imapct on society and the ways in which companies use these devices to communicate with the world.
Stephen Stockwell examined the French new wave cinema and how it was brought about. The availability of cheap, light-weight cameras and audio equipment used simple methods to tell complex, challenging stories like La Jetee which became the basis for Twelve Monkeys and Alphaville which might be claimed as the first work of cyberpunk. (Stockwell, 2007 Lecture notes week 2) I will now brief you on La Jetee.
The Film we watched "La jevetee", was filmed using photographs played out as a photomontage with no actual dialog but a story about the few survivors after the World War III in Paris. The survivors were forced to live underground and some of the few were then participants in an experiment to be sent back to the past, before the war, to hopefully recover the neccessaties they were deprived of due to the radio-activity. After being sent back and forth, the subject was then killed in the triumph to go back in time to the past.
Basically, people in that era thought of a concept of time travel to solve a problem they may have had, in this sense, the scarce amounts of food and medical supplies was jeopardising survival.
In Summary, The lecture outlines the advances of Technology and how it was used in the past to make the present better. However, as technology advances, society doesn't always follow. It has ups and downs, but we cannot help the new age world from growing, so I guess we just have to sit back and take it as it comes :)

First Tutorial
Hi All,
Today is Friday, 9th of March, and I am currently in my first tute for this subject, that being, "New Communications Technology". This is my first web blog, kinda exciting, kinda not, but it I will make sure to make it pretty for those who have the privileged to view such a page.. I am looking forward to buidling my blog so it is filled with things to read. The room is currently drowning in the sound of fingers banging on the keyboard, so that's kind of annoying (just quietly). Today is also a significant day for my boyfriend and I as it is our 23 months, but whose counting?so yayaya for that. And tomorrow is all plates $2.50 at my favouritsts sushi place in the world so I am totally looking forward to that. Getting bakc on topic to this course however, the lecture today was quite interesting, the movie we watched "La Jetee" was so creepy I am certain I will be having nightmares tonight so that'll be fun. Well Well, unfortunatly my first post has come to an end, been good and you will be hearing from me next tute :)
